The LOGOS represented here will take you to the home pages of some of the makers we feature at The Great Divide. We are unabashed fans of the great Martin guitars of the 1930s. Both Collings and Santa Cruz add the ultimate degree of craftsmanship and their own interpretations to these proven designs. Martin has responded to the challenge by making outstanding vintage reproductions of their own earlier guitars. In mandolins, we have long represented Mike Kemnitzer's Nugget Mandolins. We believe Nuggets to be the very best mandolins being made... anywhere. That being said, Collings is making some of the very best small factory mandolins to be had anywhere. Other makers including Don Paine, of Pomeroy Mandolins are also selling their instruments through us. The folks at National Resophonic are also making state-of-the-art resonator guitars in the styles of the 30s, and well as some new interesting designs... if you're a slide fan, check them out. We also carry the Pogreba aluminum resonator guitars... and they have proven to be popular with some of the world's best slide players. One of the best things about owning a guitar shop is being able to handle and play many fine musical instruments. While our selection of vintage instruments would rival those available most anywhere, many would agree that some of the very best instruments ever made... are being made right now.

Collings

just in

CW Adirondack Mahogany
$5075 ohsc Monster. Crispy, deep, and loud. Won't find many of these.
Collings
D2HG

$4075 ohsc Another perfect Collings, and the German Spruce top has a great tone. Very deep, clear and powerful bass response, but without losing the treble at all. The German Spruce is very much like Adirondack. It's white and hard with that great quick response. I have another of these arriving any day. Come in a choose the best of two.
Collings
$4175 ohsc A beautiful herringbone trimmed OM mahogany with a 1 3/4" neck width and German top. This guitar is big, warm, and wide in tone. I think of it as loud, but buttery smooth. Really a pretty guitar too.
Collings

OM-2H Cutaway
$4375 ohsc Another superlative Collings guitar. Clean as a whistle of course, and incredibly responsive all over the neck. The ideal fingerpicker's, or singer/songwriter guitar. Plenty of clarity and volume. 1 3/4" neck width with Sitka Spruce top and rosewood body.

Collings

D1A

$4475

ohsc

This is likely the best sounding D1A yet. It's got a fairly wide grained Adirondack top with some nice bear claws... and the tone and volume are both unbelievable. 1 3/4 neck width with nickel Waverleys. I have two of these in stock and would be happy to help you select your personal favorite.

De'ja Vu

Sold

$9200

ohsc

This is our second instrument from the shop of Wilhelm Henkes and Rudolph Blazer in Tuebingen, Germany, but the first new one... and the first with our Logo and design elements. Willi and Rudolph have a well-earned reputation as one of Europe's premier vintage style shops both in the restoration and construction of traditional guitars. You just have to see the pictures.... a fantastic instrument.

note - We also carry a large selection of Martin lower end guitars (000Ms, DMs, D-15s, etc)

Holmes
Grand Concert 6112

"Fingerpicker's Delight"

$2400 ohsc

This is a handmade grand concert with a slightly thicker body of "Sapelle". It's a very stable African hardwood similar to mahogany.A nicely made instrument with excellent sustain and balance. At the asking price it's a great choice for someone who appreciates handmade instruments. It uses a bolt on neck and 1 3/4" neck width. The Sitka top shows very nice bear claws and the playability is excellent

Holmes $3250 ohsc This is a large bodied "Sapelle" grand auditorium with a robust tone. I would characterize it as primarily fingerstyle handmade instrument. The neck is slim and accurate and the tone is clear with nice sustain. David uses a bolt-on neck attachment and a 1 3/4" neck width. Check out the beautiful spalted maple peghead overlay.

Martin

.

$4199

ohsc

These are consistently about the best guitar that Martin produces. You just can't get any closer to a 1937 D-18 in a new instrument. Every detail is true to the original, and the sound is impressive. Deep, with a strong bass, but a nice clear treble and midrange. The neck shape is like a '36 or '37. Fairly large with some V and a 1 3/4 width. This particular one has a quite wide grained Adirondack top, which is apparent in the photo... but I've learned that these can be very good sounding tops. Great Geib hardshell. Ask for our price.

Martin

HD-28V

$3899

ohsc

This is the vintage D-28, all of the '37 features (except Brazilian), always strong.

Martin

D-18V

Loud D-18 with good warmth too. We like these, and the GE's too.

$30,000

sound+++, #5 of 66. The most collectible of all Martin special issue guitars by far.... if not yet recognized as such. Still one of the most two or three impressive sounding guitars to pass through the Great Divide in 30 years... including prewar Martins. I bought it in 1992, and stashed it away until a few years ago. Now it looks good up beside the '41 D-28 and the '30 OM-28. Somebody will be lucky to get this guitar, but they SHOULD play it.

Martin
LX-1 "Little Martin"
$419 nice gig bag These are the best little travel guitars, or nice guitars for kids that you're likely to find. Really nice playable, accurate necks and a great tone for a little guitar. I'd call it a 5/8 size instrument. The ones we like the best are the ones with the "wood product" sides and back, but solid spruce tops. Basically indestructible guitar, and the gig bags are really nice.

Martin is also building a nice selection of "16 Series" guitars, many of which are Cutaways and Acoustic Electrics . We have them so call for more information. We also have a variety of Smartwood guitars, and also the lesser expensive Road Series. 970 925 7492.

Pogreba

sold

Blue Olds O7 $2400 ohsc

It's so much fun to have another of Larry Pogreba's instruments in the store. The history of these aluminum bodied resonator guitars is legendary indeed. Many of the world's great slide players have a Pogreba in their repertoire, including Bonnie Raitt, and Keb 'Mo.

They have an incredibly nuanced, and loud tone... very distinct from guitars by National or Dobro. Wild and wooly (like Larry) who has among his inventions a cannon that shoots bowling balls two miles... straight up.

Santa Cruz D/M Mahogany Adirondack top $3925 ohsc This is the great contrast. The opposite design in many ways from the great Collings guitars. Light as an old Martin D-18, but just beautiful sounding. Fat, big warm bass with lots of airiness. But a good ring on the treble too. These are fine guitars.

Santa Cruz

H Cutaway

$3935

oshc

This baby has a German Spruce top, and is amazingly powerful. Also a good looking instrument. You have to respect the design of these Santa Cruz instruments. Lightweight like an old Martin. Photos very soon.

Santa Cruz

OM Mahogany

$3975

ohsc

This is consistently our most eagerly anticipated Santa Cruz guitar. I've gotten them (at least 10 so far) both with and without advanced forward bracing. I have to say I like the standard bracing more in this particular model. Tonal characteristics are warm, but loud. The opposite of tinny or thin to be sure. There is a good pop when playing lead, but also a great ring for the fingerpicker. I think of the guitar, even in the treble, as having these big, fat buttery notes all over the neck.

Three more Santa Cruz guitars arriving soon. The first is a Brazilian Tony Rice with and Adirondack top.

Mandolins and Banjos on Order - Just opened the Nechville Banjo line and will have our first "Classic" model soon with the top-of-the-line ball bearing tone ring and radiused fingerboard. More Collings mandolins always on the way, and a Nugget from time to time.

Inquire here about Nugget Mandolins. They will be occasionally appearing, and there is a chronological list of interested parties. See photos of Nuggets at our Mandolin Page.

Nugget Availability... rest assured that Mike is slaving away making mandolins, and he's getting closer to being caught up. Orders will not be taken in the near future, but rather Nuggets will be made and then offered for sale at the current retail price. These prices are not yet established. All mandolins that pass through The Great Divide will be offered in chronological order to those on our list. We do expect instruments to begin to appear in the coming year.

gig bag

More fun, and more musical actually, than one would have a right to expect. Oh my God, everyone will have one.

Collings

sold

$4850 ohsc One beautiful little A Model with a big time open sound. This is the first varnish finished Collings that I have received. Plenty of woody bass and great pop all over the neck.
Collings

$3500 ohsc This is one chunky sounding little mandolin. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the "pmtob" nickname. If not, give me a call. This is a red spruce topped, one-piece back MT2 with gold hardware. It's a real pleasure to play even brand new right out of the case. Lots of volume.

Deering

The perfect beginning banjo. Fun to play and with a nice tone.

Tom Hicks
F #4

not for sale

nfs
hsc

My good friend Tom Hicks has just completed his fourth mandolin, and it's a gem. Tom is the ultimate sonic researcher. Each of his four mandolins have sounded very good, with #3 being an especially high grade professional sounding instrument. Number four is the best yet, and the craftsmanship has advanced commensurate with the sound. Tom's work is excellent, and his French polished varnish finish is classy to be sure. The playability is also outstanding on this instrument. This instrument is not for sale, as Tom needs to keep a mandolin to play for himself, but numbers five and six are underway. Next year Tom will retire from his ski patrolman duties to build mandolins and fiddles full time.

Kentucky

KM-254

$499

ohsc

This latest batch is really good. I'm keeping one as my travel mandolin, but you could play it in a pro bluegrass band... no foolin'. Shocking. These mandos have arched fingerboards, the set-up is excellent. They are lightweight and pretty darn open sounding.

Nechville

sold

Classic
$3550 ohsc A full-on traditional style Nechville with radiused fingerboard, Cyclotronic tone ring system, and maple neck and resonator. This banjo shows that the instrument was not through being invented. Great bell-tone and volume up the neck, and a wonderfully radiused fingerboard. This is a warm sounding, but still crispy, deep professional banjo with a killer feel... all one needs really... pics soon.
Nugget

Brand new for Uncle Sandy

not for sale
Calton This is my new Nugget. It's not for sale, but I wanted to show it off so that you could see Mike's latest work... including the new varnish and French polished finish. It's a sweet but loud instrument with great old rock maple sides and back and a red spruce top. It's also a great contrast to my old #62 which I've been playing these past 25 years. The old one, with it's Englemann top, is dried out and woody to the max and will stop a banjo dead in it's tracks. The new one rings like a bell and has the most beautiful pop on the trebles strings.
Pomeroy

sold

F Style
soon ohsc This is the nicest Pomeroy yet from the bench of Don Paine in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It's a cremona blonde varnished F with beautiful tone and a nice pop on all the individual strings. This makes for a lively chop, even when played ever so lightly... but great power when you get into it. Pics soon.
Pomeroy

sold

PF-5 #75
$4200 ohsc This is a golden varnished instrument, and the best sounding yet. I know I said that about the other two on this page, but this is

Pomeroy sold

F Style #67

$3950

ohsc

This is the best Pomeroy F we've had yet, and they've all been nice. The power is definitely more substantial, with the chop staying strong up the neck. As you may notice, the prices are coming up on these mandolins, as they well should. Don has a consistently sweet tone, but this one has more fatness in the treble, and just more bass. I'd highly recommend it for the player ready for their first professional F. They are handmade from beginning to end, and the care Don takes is evident throughout.

See more Pomeroy Mandolins at our Mandolin Page Archive

In this section, prices are as advertised. Again feel free to call Sandy at (970) 925-7492. If you're more interested in electric instruments, you should go to our Great Divide Electric page.

Blazer-Henkes

Deja Vu

sold

2000

as new

ohsc

$10,500

Wilhelm Henkes and Rudolph Blazer are two very fine makers with a partnership in Germany. Their company, "Antique Acoustics" builds very high level instruments in the tradition of the great instruments of the 1930s. Visit them at http://www.antique-acoustics.de/

High level collectors send their old Martins to Germany for Antique Acoustics to restore. This guitar was built as a tribute to the great Larson Brothers instruments of the 30s. It's a possible predecessor to the J-200 body shape. This instrument has it all. Brazilian Rosewood, elaborate abalone inlay, and an a truly amazing powerful sound. See the photos to get the idea. Come to Aspen to play it. Never mind, it's sold.

Look under New Acoustic Instruments (above) to see the first Great Divide OM from the Blazer/Henke shop. It's an outstanding instrument, but alas, it's also sold.

ohsc
$11,000 Other than replaced tuners, this instrument is all original with a nice warm, chunky, beefy sound. Don't see many J-185s any more.
1934 v.good ohsc $12,000 This is the first year for the Super 400. It's a great playing instrument with a few hits. The pickguard is a look-alike replacement, and there is a top crack repair with a spruce splice. All the same, a very rare bird at a good price.
1947 exc ohsc $19,500 The nicest looking all original '47 000 that you're likely to come across. Note the sides. Unbelievable bookmatched burl cut Brazilian... almost bird's eye, and really unique. The back is quarter sawn with nice figure toward the center. No hits at all except a little buckle spot on the back and miscellaneous light dings and scratches. Powerful ringing tone and the original case, which is way cool.

A nice chunky sounding upper intermediate banjo. Really a nice player too. Good for your 2nd banjo until you simply must have an old Gibson or maybe a Nechville. I'll have a new Nechville Classic soon.

Gibson

Mastertone

1929 v.good hsc $3000 This is an original ball bearing arch-top pot with a re-created 5-string neck. Has a skin head now, so a little dark sounding, but a really cool banjo. These pots are worth more than 3k. Call for photos. With a 5-Star head would likely be a very nice bluegrass banjo. Peghead broken once, but a nice playing neck to be sure.
Fender

exc hsc $3450 This is a great sounding (and good looking) instrument from Tom Hicks of Mesa, Colorado. Tom and I have been close friends for 35 years, and as he gets close to retiring from full time ski patrolling on Aspen Mountain... he gets more and more serious about mandolin building. Although it's only his third instrument... it's a killer. No compromises of any kind in this throaty little powerhouse. Great treble too. Go to the photos to get an idea.
The "Romando"

Nugget

sold

1999
219
exc. hsc $23,500

This is a one of a kind very special Nugget Deluxe F. It is serial number 219, made in 1999. It's unique in every way except the sound, which is excellent and very much what one would expect. I have two Deluxe Fs as my personal instruments... #62 and#261.

My older instrument has an Englemann top, is 27 years old with loads of playing time. It's dry, loud, and woody to the max. My new F has a Red Spruce top. It's loud but sweet, with the low end still developing... but impressively. This instrument has a lacquer gloss finish, and an Englemann top and fits just perfectly in tone and volume between #62 and #261. It's loud, and woodier than my new one, but sweeter than my old one.

The maple flame is spectacular, as you can see, and the instrument is in near perfect condition. The stylized torch on the peghead blends perfectly with the "Romano" design. In short, it's an excellent mandolin. Price is $23,500 in a TKL case.

Nugget Deluxe A

#66

sold

1982

mint ohsc $15,000

We've been anxiously awaiting this special A Model built in 1982. This mandolin had the top damaged and the instrument was sent by the owner to Mike who had a great Adirondack top standing by. Mike also added a new arched fingerboard and his own silver-plated brass, engraved tailpiece. It was then re-fretted and refinished with Nugget's new French polished oil varnish finish.

It's a real winner tone-wise as well. The sugar maple back is a good mate for the red spruce top, and the bell-tone is there in spades. Plenty of warmth and volume, and these instruments really grow as they get played. Here's a chance to get an old Nugget, but in mint condition. Check out the peghead by the way. Great Divide Nugget List members are now being notified and may purchase this mandolin in order of their position on the list.

$24,000 This great Nugget just became available, and it's a winner. It has been beautifully kept by it's original owner with only the slightest fingernail imprints on the treble side. No cracks, no dings, perfect top profile. The top is Englemann spruce, as is my number 62, and the tone and volume are remarkably similar for those of you that have played mine. Lively, loud with a great ringing treble and good whappy bass. Plenty of open snap for the serious bluegrasser. First member of my Nugget list to get in touch gets it.
Nugget Deluxe F #248

sold

2004 as new Calton $25,000

This Deluxe F is only 13 mandolins back, and has everything going for it. Beautiful condition, satin varnish finish, and all the earmarks of Mike Kemnitzer's legendary craftsmanship. It has hardly been played, but has the lush and powerful sound associated with Nugget Mandolins. It is being offered first to those on the Great Divide Nugget list, and those folks have been notified. The price is firm at $25,000 plus shipping in it's Calton case.

near mint Calton $15,000 Just received this great sounding A Model. I once sold #214, and this instrument is a near twin. The tone is strong and meaty (ie. think thick sounding, opposite of thin). It has wonderful bell tone up the neck and a good bluegrass chop as well. These mandolins don't appear often, as those of you on the Great Divide Nugget list can attest. There are no finer mandolins out there, and it is always a treat to see them pass through the shop. Priced with a black Calton case.

$22,000

This is a one owner mandolin that is in perfect, pristine condition. The magic is all there in the tone. Beautiful bell-tone harmonic structure. Amazing bass, ringing treble. It has great focus and typifies the Nugget sound. Mike's mandolins are very easy to identify by sound, and the artistry shines through, even in these small photos. This instrument is being offered through the Great Divide's Nugget Waiting List. If you want a great sounding, elegant but not ostentatious mandolin... #246 will fill the bill. Call me (Sandy) at the shop if you have any further questions. Meanwhile I'll enjoy playing it.

$4200
Don Paine is now in his mid-90s in total number of mandolins built. He has established a reputation as a fine maker of sweet sounding instruments, but with very respectable volume. This is an earlier instrument which we had a chance to acquire that Don has been using as his personal mandolin. It's warm and open and representative of his work during this period. It's a varnished mandolin with his own satin finish and available with hardshell case at $4200. We're hoping to have more of Don's instruments in the coming year.

Go to the Mandolin Page to get more information on Nugget Mandolins as well as photos and info on other interesting instruments.

Banjos - used - I usually have a couple of beginner miscellaneous banjos in the $200 or less range.

Fiddles - We also have some nice bows.

I bought a few violins in Cremona, Italy... they no longer remain, but you can still look at the pictures of the Zambelli if you like.. Also, we always have some fiddles and bows in the $300-$2000 range.
